RFID tags and transponders contain silicon chips, the brains of the component. The chip dictates the data collection features and communication protocols for the tags. Some chips have memory banks, some are read/only while some are read/write. Certain chips offer encryption features for high security applications.

Special tag packaging may be required in low frequency or high frequency versions. Applications where more than one transponder may be present in the reader field at a time may require anti-collision algorithms within their protocols.
